Equipment
A successful graft comes down to three things: a blade that cuts cleanly, a well-applied tie and a label that says what you grafted. Here is the equipment we use ourselves at the nursery, in small quantities for amateur grafters.
Cut, tie, label
- Single-bevel grafting knife, for right-handers pulling or left-handers pushing: ideal for the whip-and-tongue graft and chip budding.
- Grafting kit: pre-cut Buddy Tape grafting tape and identification labels, for 20 or 50 grafts; the price per graft falls with the quantity.
- Aluminium push-in labels (150 × 80 mm): engraved with a variety name from about a hundred, with a rootstock name, or blank to engrave yourself.
Good habitsSharpen and clean the blade before each session, and disinfect it between trees: some viroid diseases, such as exocortis, are spread by tools. On the label, write the variety, the rootstock and the date.
