About Enzo Grapefruit

Enzo is grown for its large, red-fleshed fruit and for a flavour profile milder than that of many yellow grapefruit. Properly ripe, the flesh is juicy, sweet and tart with moderate bitterness. The precise varietal origin of Enzo is poorly documented in the available references, so we avoid attributing to it a history we cannot verify.

Our observations at the nursery

The fruit can be eaten from winter onwards, but it is markedly bitter at that stage. Where conditions allow it to hang on the tree until June, that bitterness drops away sharply and the fruit becomes far more agreeable. In our conditions its hardiness strikes us as moderate.

Enzo Grapefruit or another variety?

Enzo is for anyone after a coloured, relatively mild grapefruit. Its hardiness remains below that of the hybrids bred specifically for cold. To go further, see our Grapefruit category.

Frequently asked questions

What colour is the flesh?

Pink to red at maturity.

Is the fruit bitter?

A light bitterness typical of grapefruit can be present, but the profile is valued for its balance.

When should it be harvested?

Mainly in winter and early spring.

Why is the origin given so cautiously?

Because the varietal history of Enzo is poorly documented in the reference sources available to us.
