About Bendizao Mandarin

Bendizao is an old Chinese mandarin suited to a collection of Asian citrus; it is found in citrus germplasm collections. Its cultivar name is worth keeping to distinguish it from the satsumas and other mandarins in the catalogue. It is of interest both for its flavour and for its history, several studies having used it to examine the diversity and relatedness of Asian citrus. Horticultural information available in Europe remains limited, so we prefer to rely on data we can verify directly on our own material.

Bendizao Mandarin or another variety?

Bendizao is above all for growers of rare and heritage mandarins. Its performance in our conditions remains to be pinned down from our own observations. To go further, see our Mandarins and clementines category.

Frequently asked questions

Where does Bendizao come from?

From China.

Is it a modern variety?

No. It is an old Asian mandarin.

When does it ripen?

It is described as relatively early, but we would rather fix the period from our own local observations.

Why are some figures left unstated?

Because reliable horticultural documentation on the clone distributed in Europe is limited, and we would rather not invent thresholds.
