How the tool chooses
It uses the tables of our guide Choosing a citrus rootstock and our experience at the nursery, near Toulouse.
- It rules out the rootstocks that do not suit: not hardy enough for your frosts, “unsuitable” for one of your soil criteria, or not compatible with the citrus you want (for example Poncirus with lemon).
- It ranks the others by how well they fit your answers (very well suited, well suited, suitable, middling, poorly suited).
- It suggests, from the most to the least consistent, the rootstocks we sell that remain possible: Poncirus, Fa5, 4475 and C35. These are pointers, not a verdict. Carrizo and Volkameriana, which we do not sell, are mentioned when they help the choice.
In a pot, your garden soil does not matter and the tree can be brought in for the winter: only the citrus you want decides.
Indicative advice: hardiness figures are orders of magnitude, and a young tree is more fragile than an established one. For frost, see also Understanding citrus hardiness. A question? Write to us.
