Which citrus trees grow around Toulouse?

Laurent studied twenty years of records from the Toulouse-Blagnac weather station (details in our guide Choosing a citrus rootstock): the area is in hardiness zone 8b; winter lows are usually -7 or -8 °C, with two cold peaks, -10 °C in 2001 and -12 °C in 2012, and up to ten days below -5 °C in some years. For his own garden he chose -7 to -8 °C as the hardiness limit for planting out, protecting the most tender trees when needed.

  • Frost first: for planting out, our varieties rated to -10 °C and below are gathered in Hardy citrus. Satsumas are the hardiest mandarins. A more tender variety can be grown in a pot and brought in for the winter.
  • Then the rootstock: Poncirus is the hardiest; on limestone soil, FA5 is suitable; on clay, Poncirus and FA5 are, 4475 and C35 much less so. Take the online test: Which rootstock should you choose?
  • Planting: in spring. On clay-limestone soil, dig a hole of more than one cubic metre, improved with compost and sand.
  • Mulch: in summer only, against drought, never touching the trunk. Pull it away from the base at the end of autumn: the moisture it holds in winter encourages phytophthora.
  • Winter: protect young plants below -5 °C. Put the winter fleece on at each frost and remove it as soon as the frost is over. From September, no fertiliser and no pruning; after a frost, wait for spring before pruning.
