Spanish-grown citrumelo 4475 rootstock, ready to graft, bare-root.
Dispatched in spring, from early March.
Getting started with this rootstock
Citrumelo 4475 (grapefruit × Poncirus) likes free-draining, acid soils; it dislikes chalk and heavy clay, and needs summer watering for the first years (see the short guide below). It is particularly suited to oranges and grapefruit.
- On arrival: bare roots must never dry out. Pot them up or heel them in on the same day, water, and keep them out of full sun and wind for the first few weeks.
- When to graft: when the bark lifts easily, usually from spring to late summer. Young plants are first grown on in pots and grafted when the collar is roughly pencil-thick, by chip budding or whip-and-tongue; a thicker stem is cleft grafted.
- Label each plant with the rootstock name: our rootstock labels.

Citrumelo 4475: the short guide
4475 is a hybrid of grapefruit and Poncirus. This is how our “Which rootstock?” tool rates it, criterion by criterion:
| Criterion | Our view |
|---|---|
| Cold | hardy to about -12 °C |
| Citrus to graft | all; best affinity with orange and grapefruit |
| Vigour | strong: for a large tree (in a pot it matters little) |
| Acid soil | very well suited |
| Loamy soil | suitable |
| Wet in winter | suitable |
| Dry in summer | middling: here, Poncirus copes with drought better than 4475 |
| Clay soil | poorly suited |
| Chalky soil | poorly suited; suitable with preparation (see below) |
| Seaside (salt) | poorly suited: FA5 or C35 do better |
Preparing the planting: a mound, a hole of about 1 m³, drained and improved with compost and sand, summer watering for the first years, and in chalky soil green manures over several years. Our experience: here, south of Toulouse (calcareous clay, wet in winter and dry in summer), 4475 does very well with a mound, a large well-drained hole and summer watering.
