Poncirus trifoliata is cold-hardy. Its shallow root system makes it the rootstock of choice for wet, heavy soils. Difficult to raise from seed, it grows very slowly. Caution: this rootstock is incompatible with some citron, lemon and tangor varieties. Its graft union is said to form a "bottleneck".
Its characteristics
This Poncirus suits silty and clay soils that hold water. It gives the grafted variety good cold resistance and high productivity while reducing alternate bearing, though its vigour is low in the first years.
Fruit size is small to medium; the very smooth, thin peel colours well. Juice content is high and the sugar/acid balance is pleasant.
It is resistant to gummosis and tolerant of tristeza, cachexia and cristacortis. It is, however, very susceptible to exocortis.
