Whether a citrus tree gets through the winter in your garden depends on the hardest cold that comes back where you live. In Germany, the differences are large. One winter in ten, the thermometer falls to about −11 °C on the North Sea, −14 °C on the Baltic, −15 °C on the Lower Rhine, −16 °C on the Upper Rhine, in the Rhine-Main area, on the Moselle and the Saar and by Lake Constance, −18 °C on the North German Plain and −19 to −20 °C in the rest of the country.

We went through thirty winters of records from the Deutscher Wetterdienst, the German weather service, from 1996 to 2026, and compared them with the hardiness of each of our plants. To be frank: in most regions of Germany, citrus trees belong in pots. In the ground, it is mainly on the coasts and in the mildest spots along the Rhine, and usually with a fleece on frosty nights. Choose your area below. You will find:

  • the citrus trees that spend the winter outdoors without protection;
  • those that need a fleece on frosty nights;
  • those that stay in a pot.

The lists are kept up to date: only the plants available today are shown with a photo.

“Ordinary winter”: half of the winters go colder, the other half less cold. “One winter in ten”: this cold is reached or exceeded in about one winter in ten. Calculations by the Greffeur d'agrumes nursery.

How to read these figures

The hardiness given on our product pages is the cold that an adult, healthy and hardened citrus tree withstands during a short frost. We compare it with the cold that comes back about one winter in ten: a plant listed “without protection” withstands at least that cold. In harsher winters, about three in thirty, keep a winter fleece ready for the coldest nights.

Very harsh winters are still possible. In February 2012, Emden fell to −18.1 °C and Ueckermünde, on the Szczecin Lagoon, to −28.7 °C; in December 2009, Freiburg fell to −19.9 °C. Such cold can burn the leaves or a few shoots of a citrus tree that is only just hardy enough. Wait for spring to see what grows back before pruning.

To understand what helps a tree get through frost, read Understanding citrus hardiness.

Our advice for Germany

  • Make use of the warmth of the city and avoid hollows. The records show it clearly: one winter in ten, Munich city falls to −16.4 °C, Munich airport to −22.3 °C; Frankfurt-Westend to −14.5 °C, Frankfurt airport to −16.0 °C. Cold air collects at night in hollows and valley bottoms. Plant against a south-facing wall of the house, never at the lowest point of the garden.
  • When in doubt, use a pot. Where it gets colder than −18 °C one winter in ten, all citrus trees stay in pots: in winter in a bright, frost-free room, outdoors from spring to autumn.
  • Take care of drainage. Heavy clay soil holds water in winter. Plant on a mound there.
  • Choose the rootstock for your soil. Poncirus is the most cold-resistant and copes with drought better than 4475. FA5 suits chalky, dry soils. 4475 adapts to acid soils, in a large hole with improved soil, and needs more water in summer. Our 5-step test helps you choose: Which rootstock should you choose?
  • Plant in spring, once the frosts are over. The tree then has a whole season to take root before its first winter. From September onwards, no fertiliser and no pruning.
  • Protect young plants on nights below −5 °C during the first years. Put the winter fleece on at each frost and take it off as soon as the frost stops.
  • Mulch in summer only, against drought, without the mulch touching the trunk. Pull it away from the foot of the tree at the end of autumn: moisture at the collar encourages phytophthora.

Frequently asked questions

Can I plant a lemon tree in the ground in Germany?

No. Lemon trees withstand about −5 °C. Even on Heligoland, the mildest place in our records, the thermometer falls to −6.6 °C one winter in ten, and to −11 °C on the North Sea islands and coast. Keep lemon trees in pots and bring them into a bright, frost-free room for the winter. For a sour fruit in the ground on the North Sea, a yuzu is a better choice: it spends the winter there without protection. You will find them in Lemons and lemon substitutes.

Which citrus trees best withstand the cold in Germany?

Citranges, Yuzu and Yuzu 3, which withstand −15 °C. On the North Sea, the Baltic and the Lower Rhine, they spend the winter without protection. In the Rhine-Main area, on the Moselle and the Saar, by Lake Constance, on the Upper Rhine and on the North German Plain, they need a fleece at each frost. On the North Sea, the other yuzus and the hardiest satsumas also spend the winter without protection, kumquats with a fleece; on the Baltic and the Lower Rhine, the other yuzus and the hardiest satsumas grow in the ground with a fleece. In the rest of Germany, even citranges stay in pots. They are gathered in Hardy citrus.

What about orange trees and clementines?

They withstand −7 to −9 °C depending on the variety. Only on the North Sea can orange trees and the hardiest clementines be tried in the ground, with a fleece on frosty nights, against a sheltered south-facing wall. In the rest of Germany, keep them in pots: outdoors from spring to autumn, in winter in a bright, frost-free room.

My town is not listed: which area should I choose?

Take the nearest area at the same altitude, then compare with the nearest station in the table of readings. Take off about one degree for every 150 m of extra altitude, and one or two degrees if you live in a hollow.

These figures are guidelines. Your garden may be milder or colder than the nearest station. Greffeur d'agrumes is a citrus nursery in the south-west of France; for delivery to Germany, see our Delivery page. A question about your plot? Write to us.
